Joy Waller Luciferina candle sex art film

Luciferina: 4 Minutes of Light vs. Dark

This is the most fun I’ve had in ages — making a short film based on one of my recent poems, “Luciferina”!

The poem was motivated by the idea of starlight, and how living in the neon paradise of Tokyo means we can’t always see the stars at night.

But then I realized that I often encounter them after they have fallen: mysterious neon junkies who have plummeted to Earth and prowl the alleyways and inner-city shrines of the metropolis, hungry for light. I’m always attracted to guys like this.

And fortunately, I know three handsome fallen angels who fit the bill perfectly, and they bravely agreed to act in the first film project I’ve attempted in over a decade. Mat Chiappe, Masayoshi Ninomiya, and Swarup Shodavaram: a stellar line-up!

We had heaps of fun shooting around the neon chaos of Shibuya, a graffiti-splattered highway, several sketchy alleys, and then finally my apartment. We got candle wax EVERYWHERE and my hair nearly caught on fire, but it was worth it!

Bob Rogue provided an amazing and hypnotic techno track to go along with the visuals, which wound up being absolutely crucial to the uneasy-dreamy tone I was going for.

You can watch “Luciferina” below. Hope you enjoy it!
